How Were Cyclists Selected?
The cyclists who are part of the United Healthcare cycling team are extremely talented and have built their reputation around the world for being the best within the sport. To get to this level, many of the team members have been cycling or participating in other sports for their entire lives. It is difficult for any athlete to make it to the elite level, and even more so for cyclists because sponsorships are limited.
Cyclists focus on living a healthy lifestyle and building overall body strength that will make them better cyclists. Most of their time is dedicated to either cycling or participating in activities that will make them better cyclists, such as weight training. In addition, genetics do play a role in their fitness level and can be a contributing factor for their success. Age, however, does not appear to be a factor. The ages of the riders ranges greatly, with the youngest, Boy Van Poppel at 24 years old and the oldest, Jason McCartney at 38 years old.
Many of the cyclists on the team have been racing professionally for several years, with some of them being members of the United Healthcare Cycling Team for the majority of their careers. Furthermore, the team is built based on strengths of each cyclist. Some cyclists perform better as all-arounders, who provide support to the team as a whole, while others are better at stage races or climbing hills. Because of this, it’s important that the cyclists work together to bring the team forward – something that many don’t consider as they believe that cycling is an individual sport.
