Janier Acevedo aiming for high GC placing

Team Jamis – Hagens Berman will line up as one of sixteen teams for the Tour of Utah, an internationally sanctionedstage race running from August 6th through 11th. The team hopes to continue their streak of success at the biggest races in North America and will look to Janier Acevedo to lead the team in a battle for the overall general classification.

The 2013 Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah is a 6-day stage race taking riders on a course nearly 600 miles long that covers over 40,000 feet of climbing. A UCI 2.1 rated event, the race boasts an impressive start list featuring many WorldTour level teams that will race from the famous national parks in southwest Utah to the ski resort town of Park City. The high altitude and big mountain passes make this a race that suites the climbers.

After his performance that captivated the nation this summer in the Tour of California, Colombian climber Janier Acevedo is ready to shine in Utah on his favorite mountainous terrain. He is a former stage winner, having won the circuit race in Salt Lake City in 2011. He will be joined by Park City resident Jamey Driscoll, who will be one of the riders fighting for the Best Utah Rider jersey. Argentine fast-man JJ Haedo will be the go to guy when it comes down to a sprint finish. They will be supported by Tyler Wren, Carson Miller, Ruben Companioni, Luis Amaran, and Matt Cooke.

Veteran racer and climbing specialist Matt Cooke has signed with Team Jamis – Hagens Berman for the remainder of the 2013 season. The Boulder, Colorado resident will focus on the upcoming hilly high-altitude races, the Tour of Utah and the US Pro Cycling Challenge.

The road that led to Matt’s signing with Team Jamis – Hagens Berman was not an easy one, but his perseverance and positive attitude has paid off. When his previous professional team folded unexpectedly at the end of last season, he was forced to scramble to figure out his future.

“It was a such a blow when I first heard the team was folding,” Matt recalls. “I had just gotten married, and instead of relaxing I had to spend the next few months thinking if should continue in the sport or just stop. I knew I was a good rider and decided I wanted to go down fighting. The New York City based elite amateur team Champion System-Stan’s NoTubes gave me a home and I raced my tail off.”

Matt caught the attention of team director, Sebastian Alexandre, with his consistent top results throughout the first half of 2013. He was as major protagonist that animated nearly every major stage race he entered, with four second places in stages of big races such as the Tour de Beauce, the Tour of the Gila, the Redlands Cycling Classic, and the San Dimas Stage Race.

“I’ve known Matt for a couple of years, but I didn’t need a rider like him until this year when I decided to focus on the stage races,” says Alexandre. “Throughout the season he has fought very hard to perform at the races he has gone to, and I noticed it right away. Matt is a very strong rider, a smart rider, and a great climber. He is perfect for the hard and hilly races at the end of the year. We will provide him with the support he needs and I think he will continue to contribute with good performances.”

Matt is motivated for the second half of the 2013, especially for the races in Utah and Colorado. “I know the team is aiming big for Utah and Colorado and I want to contribute there. I look at our team and I see some real potential for these two stage races.”

He’s also looking forward to teaming up with Columbian climber Janier Acevedo. “I think Janier is the best climber racing in the US right now. Racing with him this year, I could tell that he is an amazing talent. I want to be there to help him in the high mountains.”

On a personal note, Matt is thrilled to continue his professional career with Team Jamis – Hagens Berman. “I am just so grateful that Sebastian is taking a chance on me. I have matured in the last few years of racing. I believe the next few seasons could be my best yet.

to make his mark on the major UCI races of the US calendar.

Team Jamis – Hagens Berman is delighted to announce the arrival of Argentinean sprinting star Juan José Haedo as the final addition to the 2013 squad. Haedo is welcomed back to the team after six successful years of racing in Europe at the WorldTour level, most recently with Team Saxo Bank.

Haedo developed as a professional rider in America, racing for a previous iteration of Team Jamis for three years before leaving for Europe. “I’m familiar with the racing in the US and excited to be back racing there,” Haedo states. “I know most of the guys in the team and I am excited as we will be a very strong team in 2013.”

Team director and fellow Argentinean native, Sebastian Alexandré, echoes these sentiments and is thrilled to be working with Haedo once again. “I know J.J. very well and have kept in touch frequently since he moved to Europe. After we finalized our sponsors for 2013, I spoke with him about this new project and the plans to grow the team and he liked the idea. With J.J. on board, this is undoubtedly the strongest team that we have ever fielded. The team will be competitive in every race we enter and I hope to show it during all of the major UCI races in the U.S. next year.”

J.J. brings extensive knowledge and an impressive palmarés to the team. He has stood on the podium in stages at all three Grand Tours, most recently with a third place finish on Stage 5 of this year’s Tour de France. He has also won five stages and the points jersey at the Tour of California, a stage at the Tour of Missouri, and took the win in 2007 at the Philadelphia Invitational.

“I’m really looking forward to the major UCI events in the USA,” Haedo notes. “I would like to add to my tally of stage wins at the Tour of California. I’ve also heard great things about the Tour of Utah and the US Pro Cycling Challenge in Colorado and hope that the team can earn invitations to these events. I’m motivated and confident that I can deliver wins for my new team.”

Carine Joannou, the president and CEO of Jamis Bicycles, is looking forward to the leadership, knowledge, and publicity that Haedo brings to the team. “J.J. is a fantastic signing for Team Jamis on all accounts. His achievements on the bike speak for themselves. It will be great to see a rider of J.J.’s caliber riding a Jamis bike. As one of the best and most powerful sprinters in the world, we’ll be able to use his feedback to help test a build better bikes for our customers.”

Haedo will make his debut in the colors of Team Jamis – Hagens Berman by leading the squad in Argentina at the UCI 2.1 rated Tour of San Luis on January 20th.
