Sea Otter Classic By Curran:
I won both days. The first race was a 90-min circuit on the seca race course with a 2.5 min hill with sections hitting 10+ percent. I attacked after a few laps to see what would transpire but nothing happened. Tyler Schwartz, a teammate, and I did a brilliant set up; jumping off the front for a few seconds, and bringing up the pace for a bit. I jumped very hard over the top and formed a break of 9 (50 started). I rolled with them, then punched it, going for it all with 3 to go; got a gap, then dug deep to hold off the chase by 22 seconds.
Road Race: 8 mi. loop with a hard-hitting climb, then some rollers, and feed zone climb with a steep drag. Including a sustained series of 5 rollers to the finish. After 4 laps we did a 2 mi. summit finish climb hitting a 13% grade. I sat-in until the second lap when I attacked hard on the main climb and formed a group of about 15-20 riders. A guy rolled off and gained around 50 seconds, but was caught sometime later. I sat-in on the climb during the 3rd lap but attacked with ferocity over the steep feed zone drag. We formed a group of four, but we were caught a few miles later at the base of the main climb. A specialized guy immediately rolled off, and I countered and dropped all but one guy, who had gotten second the previous day. We worked and got a gap of about one minute heading into he summit finish. We tempoed the lower slopes. I thank the “wall” at live oak for the finish. We started to mark each other and slowed down/track stand at 500 to go. Then I made a Philipe Gilbert/Purito Rodriguez move and popped my competitor in a sprint from 180 meters out.
This was a huge junior race; riders came from the East Coast, Idaho, and all over, as well as many of the Southern California riders.
