After winning the Points Race Championship the last two years in a row, I thought I had a pretty good chance of winning it again. Has anyone ever won the race three times in a row? Regardless, I was going to give it my all.
The 2012 National Points Race Championship started with some fast and furious racing right from the gun. Unfortunately, I placed 5th in the first sprint, right out of the points. The next two sprints went well; I won them both. Now I was leading the race. Directly following the third sprint, a four-person group formed and I was in it. O.K., now if I could recover from the last sprint maybe the four of us could work together to lap the field. The main group didn’t like the looks of our group and put up a very fast and motivated chase. We stayed off until the next sprint where Bobby Lea beat us pretty handily. Once he saw he had a small gap on us, he kept the pace high, closing the small gap to the field. The rest of us didn’t have the energy to do anything about it but still tried our hardest to catch the field.
For the next 50 laps, I tried my hardest to recover and gather the energy to salvage a last ditch effort to win the race. This proved very tough as I was obviously not on my best day. I knew I needed to lap the field to win. I tried a couple more times to get away from the group in the last 40 laps but Bobby was just too strong and kept my moves in check. With 30 laps left I knew my minutes were numbered as the Points Race Champion.
In the end, I am happy that I had the opportunity to defend my title and go for three in a row. You can’t say that I didn’t try! Huge props go out to Bobby Lea, Daniel Holloway and Liam Donaghue who proved they were better that day.
