Icing on the Proverbial Cake
Technically, this is my off season. That means coffee rides and tanning on the beach, but I can never stay away from the racing scene for long! This weekend’s SoCal Cyclocross Series race was in Camarillo, a 20 minute drive from my house. It would be silly of me to pass up an opportunity to race cycling’s funnest, dirtiest discipline. My only expectation coming into it was to have fun!
The whistle blew, I settled into third position and held it for about a lap until one rider in front of me faded back, slotting me into second position. Carolin Schiff had first position, drilling it on the straights, I was happy to go along for the ride. At about 3 laps to go, my lack of intensity training became very evident. I dropped off her pace, where I was soon joined by Amanda Schaper. We rode together for 2 laps before she dropped her chain with a half lap to go. I finished, happily, in second place! A little pocket money, a bottle of cold-brewed coffee, some Vegan cookies, and catching up with old friends were all just extra icing on the proverbial cake!”
