Since I was asked to pilot a tandem at Para Track Nationals, it’s been a scramble around my house looking for information on para-cycling. It’s not easy to find unless you know what you’re looking for or have someone already involved. I felt how I imagine able-bodied “newbies” to road or track cycling feel when they first get started: overwhelmed.
I had no idea the level of competition I was committing myself to until I actually met my teammate Kara Vatthauer, laid eyes on her custom made track tandem, and listened to her experiences of racing around the world. What is the most daunting is her desire and goal to make time standards for the national team for a shot at competing in the Olympics in Rio. It wasn’t even a possibility for me until meeting her, and now I’m along for the ride.
We’re focusing one one step at a time, but the opportunity to race for more than just myself and my team sponsors has me excited and freaking out a little inside. What an amazing opportunity – I’m going to grab it!
Para Track Nationals is held in conjunction with a UCI track race held at VELO Sports Center in Carson, CA November 21 – 23, 2013. More information on LA Grand Prix here.
