The race was very hard and fast from the start. We averaged almost 27 mph for the 60-minute race. My team wanted to race aggressively from the start. The team did a great job following through with that plan.
We attacked often and were in several breaks, but with the other strong riders that were racing, we couldn’t get anything breaks to stick.
I had a perfect lead-out from Carmen Small. She did such a great job leading me out for all of the intermediate sprints. I maxed out the points and won the sprint jersey.
Coming into the last lap, my team was getting organized to lead out Leah Kirchman for the final sprint. Alison Powers jumped hard and I got on her wheel. We gapped the field and held the gap through the last corner. I sat on her wheel until about 200m to go, then jumped and came around her for the finish.
My team swept the jerseys with Leah getting Best Young Rider for 3rd place; I got the sprint jersey and the overall.
It was an awesome race with huge crowds making a lot of noise cheering us on, and a great day for Optum Pro Cycling presented by Kelly Benefit Strategies.
