Lodi Cyclefest Criterium Pro 1/2
This past Sunday was the 12th event in the NCNCA Premier Series. Despite the big money crits down South and riders already in Madison for Elite Nationals, a strong field showed up the contest the 5th annual Lodi Cyclefest Criterium. With temperatures well above 100 degress and a highly technical course, almost every field split up into multiple groups by the time the finish came around, and the Pro 1/2’s would be no exception.
Off the line, it was Team Mike’s Bikes p/b Incase trying to put the other teams on the defensive with multiple attacks through the opening laps. Before long, Shawn Rosenthal (Team Mike’s Bikes p/b Incase) and Joshua Carling (Team Bicycles Plus) managed to open up a large gap on the field. Chuck Hutcheson (Marc-Pro Strava) was able to bridge a few laps later with Rosenthal’s teammate, Roman Kilun, getting a free ride up to the break on the wheel of Hutcheson.
Back in the field, the race was starting to split up through the impetus of Max Jenkins (5-hour Energy p/b Kenda), Jared Kessler (Folsom Bike) and Dirk Himley (Hammer Nutrition). Mike’s Bikes and Marc-Pro were doing their best to disrupt any chase attempts, and in the confusion that followed, Brandon Trafton was able to bridge solo to the breakaway, making it 3 out of 5 riders off the front for Mike’s Bikes.
Coming into the final few laps, it was Kilun and Hutcheson off the front with Trafton and Rosenthal chasing behind after an unfortunate crash with 3 laps to go by Carling. Kilun would come away with the victory on the final lap followed by Hutcheson, Trafton, and Rosenthal. After helping drag a small group away, Jenkins was able to cross the line in 5th place on the day to complete the podium.
