I heard that the San Raphael Twilight is an absolute must event; cycling, great atmosphere and a big party at the end. What more could you ask for in a race? Naturally, when good prize money is on offer you get some of the bigger women’s teams present. Exergy Twenty12 had a four women squad present with standout riders Allison Tetrick and Katie Antonneau, with local hero Ollivia Dillon and international racer Flavian Oliveri. The Vanderkitten Focus team, with their young upcoming rider Ruth Winder, was also present making for a fast and furious race. With much attacking in the first half of the race, I was hoping after the primes opportunities to break away. Being a marked rider I never got too far away from the field, and most of the girls, bar Ally, wanted a sprint. With five to go, Ally pulled away from the pack, dropping the girl behind who left a gap. Before we knew it, six seconds became 10 and it was apparent that the local teams were looking at a few of us individual riders to do something. After attempts to bridge, it was clear no one wanted to chase, so I set myself up for the bunch kick for second, knowing you had to be at least third wheel into the last corner, no further back. Going into the last corner I was indeed third wheel and launched my sprint to take the bunch sprint for second. The event was incredibly well run, with an awesome atmosphere and just a lot of fun in general. I will definitely be back next year and maybe this time with some teammates.
