The race started out super hard and fast. The game plan was for my Mountain Khakis/SmartStop teammates, Neil Bezdek, Chris Monteleone, and Clay Murfet to cover moves and try to get in a breakaway. My job was to save it up and bank on a sprint finish. I thought I could win, but it was a little gamble to wait for the sprint since CashCall had eight guys. I trusted our guys to deliver me through the last turn and they did.
We took over with two laps to go and just kept rolling it up until I only had one guy in front of me coming into the final turn. I knew it was a long way from the last turn so I waited a bit until someone else jumped. I set myself up for the perfect line on the inside so when the sprint started, I just took a run at and came out on top. We were a bit out numbered but the boys rode their hearts out and kept things together.
This race was huge for us with our title sponsor, SmartStop holding the race. We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to win. And to come away with the win with only four guys is huge! A big thanks to Michael Schwartz from SmartStop.
