The Barry Wolfe Grand Prix has always been epic, but I still welcomed this year’s new race course, which turned out to be exciting and challenging. Barry Wolfe was a greatly respected cyclist,so feel always honored to be a part of the race. Those who did not personally know Richard Meeker should know that he was a great person.

Listen, this is criterium racing. This isn’t waiting for two hours to see guys pass in 10 seconds. This isn’t a TV commentator trying to add color to a grueling 8% grade climb through the Alps. This is “What the heck was that?” followed by “$#!* Here they come again!”
And for that lethargic forty seconds the riders are out of sight on the backside of the course, American cycling’s most renown voice and analyst, Dave Towle, is breaking down every nuance of what’s happening before your eyes.
And your blood is racing as local celebrity DJ Just pumps Afrojack and Pretty Lights through your veins…
And you have a beer in your hand. And a cowbell in the other..

McGrath, of Exergy Twenty12, crossed the finish line just ahead of Novartis rider Allison Powers. Exergy rider and national criterium champion Theresa Cliff-Ryan was third.Powers disputed the finish, claiming McGrath should not have been given a free lap during an incident mid-race. Powers thought McGrath was wrapped up in a crash and lost a lap. After the dispute, Powers was listed as the winner on “corrected” race sheets released to the public. McGrath and her manager came over to challenge the dispute. What happened, according to Exergy Twenty12 manager Simon Cope and another team manager who was in the vicinity, was that McGrath was clipped during a wreck and broke a wheel spoke, but didn’t fall.Rules allow for a free lap at certain times of the race for mechanical repairs.

The equivalent word in French is Cyclosportif; the British, Flemish, and Dutch call them Cyclosportives. Participation is open to recreational and competitive amateur cyclists; thousands of riders of all abilities participate.

The Awbrey Butte Road Race has shaped many an overall race. A staple of the Cascade Classic, it has also been used for multiple national championship races. The roughly 16-mile circuit touches the edge of Bend’s tony Awbrey Buttle neighborhood before cruising through Shevlin Park and out into the high desert hills. The course features two significant climbs, including the lung and leg busting ascent of Archie Briggs road.

It was gloriously scenic, from the start at Henry VIII’s front door and the plunge down the start ramp between the ornate lion and unicorn on Hampton Court’s gates, after which it was a succession of lush, tree-lined lanes with crowds three and four deep at times, union flags waving decorously. The suburbs could hardly have been leafier for what could have passed for a coronation procession or a royal wedding.
