Roger Millikan Criterium
By: Holly Breck (SC Velo/Incycle Cannondale)
The Roger Millikan Crit is in Brea, CA. This year it was on a slightly different course; more flat than the regular course but still fast and fun. The women’s race started at 8AM sharp. It was pretty damn cold, but we still had an awesome turn out with 35 fast women showing up. Helen’s and SC Velo/Incycle had a good showing, as did La Grange. Jen Valente from Exergy and a few others rounded out the competition.
The race took off pretty fast and steady, with nothing too serious right off the bat, but there were some good moves by PC (Helen’s) and a few from Julie Cutts (La Grange) that I kinda got nervous about at times, but someone from the opposing teams brought them all back. They kept throwing cash primes at us, which also helped keep the race pretty fast. We did have a solo break from Lisa Campbell (SC Velo), but it was brought back.
With 7 laps to go there was a crash just past the start/finish line going into corner one. People just got a little excited and overly comfortable. One person went into another and only one rider went down. Luckily, the person who went down was OK, besides suffering a little road rash.
So, with the crash kinda waking everyone up and with the laps counting down, everyone was fighting to get to the front. With about 3 laps to go SC Velo and Helen’s started making their ways up to the front. The speed started to pick up and things started to get pushy-shovey. I had Lisa Campbell and Pam in front of me to get me to the line and Helen’s had Suzanne and PC working for Shelby. With one lap to go people started peeling off and, all of a sudden, I found myself coming out of the last corner in 3rd place sprinting against Shelby from Helens and Jen Valente from Exergy. We all sprinted as hard as we could but I had nothing for them. Jen crossed the line 1st, Shelby was 2nd, I came in 3rd. All in all a great day–and of course I can’t thank SC Velo/Incycle Cannondale enough!
