RADIOSHACK LEOPARD TREK’s Chris Horner will not be able to take the start in Corsica on June 29th. Horner recovers from his knee operation of two weeks ago. Chris Horner suffers from an iliotibial band friction syndrome since the end of Tirreno-Adriatico.

Christopher Horner (born October 23, 1971) is an American professional road bicycle racer for UCI ProTour team RadioShack-Nissan.[1] A native and current resident of Bend, Oregon,[2] Horner dominated the American road racing scene[3] by winning the points standings in the 2002, 2003 and 2004 USA Cycling National Racing Calendar.
On October 4, 2009 it was confirmed that Horner would compete for Team RadioShack in the next two seasons.[7] In one of his strongest European campaigns, Horner garnered first overall at the Vuelta al Pais Vasco (Tour of the Basque Country), including a stage win in the critical 6th stage ITT, defeating overall threat Alejandro Valverde. Horner also achieved several top 10 placings in the Spring classics of the Fleche Wallone, Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Amstel Gold. He and his RadioShack teammates did well at the 2010 Tour of California, with Horner putting on a particularly strong performance in the last stage of the race as a member of a final breakaway at Thousand Oaks. Horner finished fourth overall, 1 min 4 sec behind winner Michael Rogers, and just 39 seconds behind teammate Levi Leipheimer in overall time. His good form also resulted in a 9th place overall at the Tour de France, as the first-placed US rider, in spite of dedicating himself in the first stages to supporting his captain Lance Armstrong.
In 2011 Horner continued his success at Pais Vasco with a second-place finish, as well as 4th in Catalunya.
Horner then accomplished the highest-profile result of his career by winning the May 2011 Tour de California stage race. He scored a major solo victory on the 4th stage, after making significant time gains on the day’s final mountain finish in San Jose. He maintained his hold on the yellow jersey until the tour’s queen stage, where he completed a two-man breakaway finish with teammate Levi Leipheimer to finalize the overall lead, and at age 39 became the oldest rider in history to win that tour.[8][9]
His participation at the 2011 Tour de France was short lived after a crash left him out of the competition.
In 2012, Horner signed with RadioShack-NissanTrek. He started The Tirreno-Adriatico as his first race since July where he finished second. He then finished 8th in the Tour of California, failing to defend his title. He then rode the Tour de France where he ended up finishing 13th overall after putting a good performance in the mountains.
It’s hard to believe Interbike is just three days away and that the domestic road season is over. I wish I could recount every memory from the past eight months, but it would probably fill the space of a novel. I could tell you about Kenda/5-Hour Energy’s amateur barbershop hour right before the time trial at Joe Martin Stage Race. Or the time the juniors from Monster Media Racing tried to set me up with one of their friends in Las Vegas during team camp. I can boast about the Kenda Pro Cycling crit squad winning 8 out of the 11 stages at Tour of America’s Dairyland, and can even talk about Monster Media Racing giving me a fitting gift by winning the first night of Tulsa Tough on my birthday. I look after riders so they can perform at their highest abilities without having to worry about things like not having water on their bikes or if there’s a wet towel to wipe down with post race. You are a bicyclist and have been warned about avoiding something called “bonk.” What is it and how do you recover from it?
The term “bonk” is another word used for the medical condition known as hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Depending upon its severity, low blood sugar can cause all kind of havoc on your body and cycling career. It can happen at any time.
According to cycling experts, bonking occurs when the glycogen (the stored version of sugar known as glucose) level in your muscles diminish. When this happens, your body switches gears and burns other fuel sources stored throughout your burn. This fuel is harder to gain access to, so your body has to work much harder to burn it. This is where the problem arises.

Last Saturday evening, I attended one of 6 sanctioned races held at the San Diego Velodrome aimed at providing an opportunity for track racers to upgrade. Usually us women don’t get enough racers to earn any upgrade points and this night was one of them. Knowing I couldn’t earn any upgrade points in the women’s field, I decided to do some men’s races. I had my pick of the men’s fields since I’m a Category 3 racer on the track and can race in any race a Category 4 male can. I decided on the 4/5 field as well as the women’s field …it wouldn’t be that hard…WRONG.
The first men’s race was a short scratch race and crazy fast! In a scratch race, the first person across the line is the winner, like a crit. It was faster than Tuesday night racing with the B’s and it was all I could do to hold on until the last lap where I was spit out the back. With the first race done and legs completely loaded, I not so gracefully dug my bar end into my thigh while getting off my track bike. I think I see the Virgin Mary in my bruise.
