Matt Freeman loves to ride and write. He’s using CyclingIllustrated.com to write about his passion for two wheels, which is refreshing since he’s been stuck writing marketing gobble-de-gook for software companies for the last five years.
He spent the first 20 years of his life racing off-road motorcycles. Between 1996 and 2003, Freeman worked in the motorcycle industry writing/editing for companies such Dirt Rider magazine, Cycle News, American Suzuki Motor Corp., Kawasaki Motors Corp., and American Honda Motor Company. During that time he learned the ropes of factory racing, helping to manage press relations for Suzuki corporate, Kawasaki’s factory road race and drag race teams, and Honda’s factory motocross, road race, and off-road teams.
In 2000, Freeman began riding bicycles to rehab a torn ACL that he had suffered during a photo shoot. By 2005 he had attained USA Cycling/International Cycling Union (UCI) Professional/Elite status in the cross country mountain biking discipline, Category 1 in cyclocross, and Category 2 in road cycling. His mountain bike racing highlights span a decade, ranging from the 2003 California State Cross Country Endurance Championship to a 2008 National Mountain Bike Series Singlespeed win at Windham Mountain Ski Resort in New York, to numerous professional podium finishes in the California State Cross Country Mountain Bike Series. He prefers mountain bike racing to road racing, but still rides his road bike 70-percent of the time, and seldom misses a Redlands Tuesday night Sunset training ride.
