In my humble opinion the Carson Crit Series 45+ Race (the old CBR course) is one of the most enjoyable race series in all of southern California. Chris and Vera sure know how to put on a race series. It’s always fun, fast, and furious! We get there, register, warm up, and then it’s game time.
Memorial Day’s 45+ plus race was stacked with all of the SoCal masters teams well represented. Once the race started Steve Klasna (Big Orange) immediately attacked and we were all strung-out single file. Instantly there was a break of 10 guys and seven of us were pulling through with three guys sitting on. The break quickly gained approximately 15 seconds on the field. With three laps in it’s a big risk to continue, however there were quite a few committed participants in the breakaway.
On the next lap Greg Liebert (Big Orange) attacked the break and I decide to go with him, followed by Bud Owens (BBI Schroeder Iron). At that point, there were only three of us in the break, which is even a bigger risk. Three of the major teams were represented in the move, so our gap grew to approximately 25 seconds.
With five laps to go the break got its second wind and we kept our advantage. On the bell lap, a sprinter’s favorite lap, Liebert and I traded pulls until it was time to launch our sprint. Greg and I took off for the line at the same time and I am grateful to say that the race ended in my favor. Thank you to my breakaway partners and to the Breakaway from Cancer team as well. Once again, another fun and safe race at the Carson Crit series.
